Mazda CX-5 vs Kia Sportage
Here, we’ll take a look at two popular crossover SUV models: the 2019 Mazda CX-5 and the 2019 Kia Sportage. We found that the Mazda model outstrips the Kia in a number of critical categories, making it more to solo- and family-drivers alike.
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 holds three “Number One” titles from the U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Car Deals” rankings; it earned the very top spot in the Compact SUVs, Compact SUVs with Two Rows, and Crossover SUVs categories. Kia trails behind at every turn, topping off with only a third-place overall ranking in the Compact SUVs category. In addition to these three impressive wins for Mazda, the new CX-5 was also a finalist for U.S. News’s 2019 “Best Compact SUV for the Money” award.
Of course, savings aren’t your only priority — safety is important, too. Mazda also has you covered there, because the 2019 Mazda CX-5 has earned a “Top Safety Pick+” designation from the IIHS, unlike the 2019 Kia Sportage.
The Kia Sportage requires owners to pay extra for the features that come standard on the Mazda CX-5. The entry-level Mazda CX-5 includes a 187-horsepower SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter DOHC engine with Cylinder Deactivation, while the equivalent Kia Sportage offers only a 181-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-four engine — and you’ll be sure miss that extra kick when accelerating. The Mazda CX-5 also comes with standard front and back all-season tires and a standard spare tire, standard remote trunk release, and a standard HD radio.
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 starts with a stronger standard powertrain and finishes with one too. Only the 2019 Mazda CX-5 makes available the mighty 250-horsepower SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter Turbocharged four-cylinder engine with Dynamic Pressure Turbo. The Kia Sportage maxes out with a 2.0-liter turbo that reaches only 240 horsepower.
At every trim level, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 and the 2019 Kia Sportage are offered at similar MSRPs. This is important to note after detailing the numerous categories in which the Mazda model leaves its Kia competitor in the dust.
