2017 Mazda3 4-door
2017 Toyota Corolla
If you’re in the market for a compact sedan that’s fuel efficient as well as sporty and fun, then it’s likely that both the 2017 Mazda3 4-door and the 2017 Toyota Corolla have crossed your mind. Both offer an array of safety and technological features that are sure to please drivers from Gastonia to Mt. Holly, but which is the better choice? After combing through the finer details of both vehicles, we are proud to announce that the 2017 Mazda3 4-door came out on top in every category. Shelby drivers don’t have to take our word for it, though – read on to learn more!
Price and Power
Two hugely important numbers to consider when purchasing a new vehicle are price and power. With a starting price of $17,845 MSRP, the 2017 Mazda3 4-door comes in well below the 2017 Toyota Corolla’s $18,500 MSRP. Still, if you’re going to be paying so much more up front, you’d expect the Corolla to have an edge when it comes to performance, but that’s simply not the case.
The Mazda3 4-door’s 2.0L SKYACTIV®-G 4-cylinder engine generates an impressive 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, plenty of power for zipping around Shelby and Gastonia. The 1.8L 4-cylinder on the Corolla L CVT only offers 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. And even with more power under the hood, the Mazda3 manages to edge out the Corolla in terms of efficiency as well. Both vehicles offer an EPA-estimated 28 mpg city, but the Mazda3 pulls into the lead with 37 mpg highway, compared to 36 mpg highway from the Corolla.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Mazda3 4-door continues to impress. The Mazda3 makes it easier than ever to find the music and information you want quickly with the MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system which features a 7-inch full color touchscreen display, compared to the 6.1 inch touchscreen featured in the Corolla’s Entune™ multimedia bundle.
Nice finishing touches like floormats and a multi-function remote are standard equipment on the Mazda3, yet are not available on the base model Corolla, so expect to pay more for such upgrades if you choose Toyota. The Mazda3 also includes keyless entry via a card key and key fob, so you can get in and get going quickly; alas, this is yet another feature unavailable on the base model Corolla.
Toyota may have tried to up its game in the safety arena by making their Toyota Safety Sense™ P standard equipment for 2017, but the Mazda3 still manages to have 5-star NHTSA safety ratings for rear side crash tests as well as overall side crash tests, and 4-star ratings for front side and rollover crash tests. With a suite of airbags, as well as standard Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control Systems on every Mazda3, Mazda continues to be a trusted name for drivers in Shelby and beyond.
